Swedbank was facing a large-scale modernization initiative in which functionality from a legacy advisory system was to be gradually migrated to the existing internal platform, the Customer Portal. The objective was to reduce dependency on a costly external system and to create a more cohesive ecosystem where Swedbank owns and manages the functionality in-house. Over a three-month period, I joined the design team as a UX Designer, with a focus on creating momentum in the project by driving and delivering key parts of the design work.

UX/UI Design

Oct 2025 - Dec 2025

The project was shaped by several parallel challenges. A tight timeline and the absence of budget for formal research required a pragmatic approach, with fast decision-making and informal validation. At the same time, long approval lead times from product owners occasionally delayed iterations. In parts, the requirements were incomplete, which meant that design work had to begin in parallel with requirements definition. Additionally, relevant components were in some cases missing from the design system, requiring new design patterns to be created in alignment with existing guidelines.

Strategy

The work resulted in a clear head start in UI and UX design for flows related to creating and managing accounts in the Customer Portal. Functionality from the previous advisory system was translated into updated, cohesive UI flows aligned with Swedbank’s design system. The project also established clear patterns for how information should be presented for private versus corporate customers. The final delivery included design documentation and prototypes ready for implementation, as well as guidelines for structuring and visualizing advisor-specific information within the platform.

To manage the limited timeframe and lack of budget for formal research, the team worked iteratively with rapid sketches and prototypes, continuously validated through close dialogue with advisors, product owners, and fellow UX designers. To reduce risk related to incomplete requirements, design activities were initiated alongside requirements development, supported by frequent check-ins to quickly adjust direction when needed. Long decision lead times were addressed by preparing clear and well-defined design proposals ahead of approvals, helping streamline the decision-making process. When the design system lacked necessary components, new design patterns were developed in line with existing guidelines and documented for continued use.
